Product Details
When the planting site is a dry ridgetop, a rocky slope or a thin-soiled bank, chestnut oak seedlings (Quercus montana, formerly Q. prinus) are the oak built for the job. This white-oak-group species is the dominant oak of Appalachian ridges, where it thrives on shallow, well-drained ground and still produces large, sweet acorns. Tennessee Wholesale Nursery supplies bare root chestnut oak seedlings in bundles of 100, 500 and 1,000 for mine reclamation, upland reforestation, DOT cut slopes and wildlife habitat on mountain land.

Built for Ridges, Rock and Thin Soil
Chestnut oak excels where deep-soil hardwoods give way. On south- and west-facing slopes, rocky knobs and sandstone ridges, its deep taproot reaches moisture in rock fractures, and once established it is one of the most drought-hardy oaks in the East. Its thick, corky bark helps it thrive in fire-maintained oak woodlands. That combination makes it a natural fit for upland reforestation where the goal is a lasting oak canopy on hard ground.
Reclamation and Slope Stabilization
Reclamation contractors and DOT crews specify chestnut oak for surface mine sites, road cuts and spoil banks, where soils are coarse and drain fast. Its strong root system anchors slopes, and as a native ridge species it re-establishes the forest type that historically covered these sites. Pair it with ground-holding shrubs from our erosion control plants collection for a full slope package.
Mountain Mast for Wildlife
Being in the white oak group, chestnut oak drops its acorns the same year they form, and its large nuts are a major fall food for deer, black bear, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, squirrels and chipmunks on ridge land where other food is scarce. On mountain hunting property, chestnut oak is often the acorn crop that carries wildlife through autumn. Its leaves also support many native moth and butterfly larvae that feed nesting songbirds.
A Tanbark Oak With History
Chestnut oak bark is rich in tannin, and in the 1800s it was the leading source of bark for tanning leather in Appalachia. The wood is heavy, strong and durable, used for railroad ties, fence posts, firewood and general construction lumber.
Planting Density on Upland Sites
| Goal | Spacing | Per acre |
|---|---|---|
| Reclamation / reforestation | 8 x 8 ft | About 680 |
| Upland hardwood mix | 10 x 10 ft | About 435 |
| Wildlife mast block | 12 x 12 ft | About 300 |
Row run gives the most stems per dollar on large tracts; the graded 12-18 inch size puts more height above competing vegetation on slopes.
Ridge Planting Companions
On dry uplands, chestnut oak pairs well with Virginia pine, black oak and sourwood, the trees it grows beside naturally on Appalachian ridges. On lower, richer slopes, blend in white oak.
Chestnut Oak FAQs
Where does chestnut oak grow best?
Chestnut oak thrives on dry, rocky ridges and upper slopes with well-drained, shallow soils in full sun.

Yes. It belongs to the white oak group, so its acorns mature in a single season.
What zones is chestnut oak hardy in?
USDA zones 4 through 8.
Is chestnut oak good for mine reclamation?
Yes. It adapts to coarse, fast-draining soils and is widely used to restore native forest on reclaimed and disturbed upland sites.
When do chestnut oak seedlings ship?
Bare root chestnut oak seedlings ship dormant in November. For large counts, request wholesale pricing.
From the Cumberland Plateau to Your Site
Our family nursery sits on 170 acres in Altamont, Tennessee, on the Cumberland Plateau, and has been growing trees since Roscoe Tate founded it in 1959. As the wholesale division of TN Nursery, we have grown more than 200,000 redbuds and supplied plants for Arlington National Cemetery. Chestnut oak seedlings are lifted dormant and shipped with roots in Terra-Sorb hydrogel, sealed to stay moist up to 12 days. Learn more about bare root seedlings.
