Silky Willow is a beautiful perennial shrub that makes a perfect addition to a wet area in zones 4-8 that needs some greenery. Its thin, purplish twigs create a gorgeous color that stands out prominently in the fall.
Silky Willow Needs A Lot Of Water
This plant requires a lot of water, so it's best to place it near a water feature that will provide the water it needs. This shrub is excellent in shade, full sun, or an area that experiences both.
The preferred soil would be acid, average, loam, clay, or sand that stays wet and moist. Its average height at total growth can be expected to land between 6 feet to 12 feet. In May, you can expect to see yellow-green blooms start popping out. This plant gets the name "silky willow" because of the hairy but smooth underside of the leaves.
Bees Love The Willow
The flowers blooming on this plant are extremely attractive to bees and beloved for their nectar. This plant naturalizes and creates colonies very quickly through dropped seeds. If not observed over the years, they will spread and grow in numbers.
The Willow Plants are Incredibly Popular
They are so incredibly popular with plant owners because they require very little assistance as long as they are near a water source. They live freely with little help or care.
The Willow Has A Stunning Purple Bark
They brighten your yards in the spring when their flowers bloom and in the fall when the color of the bark shines through with its unique shade of purple. You can plan for the silky willow to grow to its tallest height in twenty years. You won't have to worry too much about its survival during winter and summer so long as the water is always near.
