Eastern Redbud Size and Range
The eastern redbud is native from southern Michigan down to central Mexico. Oklahoma made it the state tree. A mature tree stands 20 to 30 feet high and about as wide. A 10-year-old is around 16 feet. It grows in full sun or part shade.
Redbud Flowers Open Before the Leaves
Rose-pink to light purple flowers open in early spring on bare wood. Many come straight out of the trunk and main limbs, a habit called cauliflory. The flowers are edible, raw or fried. Heart-shaped leaves follow, 3 to 4.5 inches across.
Bees, Caterpillars and Pods
Only long-tongued bees can reach the nectar, mainly blueberry bees and carpenter bees. Henry's elfin butterfly caterpillars feed on the leaves. Each pod is 2 to 4 inches long and holds 10 to 12 chestnut-brown seeds. The pods hang on into winter. The genus name, Cercis, comes from the Greek word for a weaver's shuttle, which is what the pod looks like.
