The Chinese snowball shrubs, or old-fashioned type, is a deciduous, semi-evergreen shrub named for its large, showy, puffy-looking white blossoms. It's a show-off plant that performs best in the warmer U.S.D.A. growing zones.
Chinese Snowball Shrubs Blooms Late Spring
This beauty needs full or partial sun to bloom in the late spring, usually in May or June. As the name suggests, this stunning species is a native of China's mainland. However, it enjoys wild popularity in the United States and is well-adapted to the mid-south, south, lower Midwest, and southwestern regions. Besides its inherently lovely appearance, this bush is deer-resistant, disease-resistant, and drought-tolerant.
The Shurb Reaches About 10 Feet Tall
Viburnum macrocephalum generally stays around ten feet high. However, the tallest known specimen was almost 25 feet high. Regardless of how tall it wants to grow, it is resilient and heals well if you wish to prune it to a shorter size.
TN Nursery customers use this bush in several gardening applications:
- Pollinator garden
- Asian theme garden
- Cottage garden
- In a partially sunny spot in your shaded garden
- As a stand-alone specimen or focal point.
It Creates an Amazing Floral Display
The shrub is multi-stemmed, forming a unique vase shape with a narrow bottom and expansive canopy. When not blooming, the leaves are whole, oval, abundant, and about four inches long. Their color is a rich green. The flowers have an apple green center covered in many petite (under an inch) pristine white florets to form a ball shape.
