Product Details

Our white dogwood trees are Cornus florida, the native flowering dogwood. Each spring it opens white blooms before the leaves, and in fall the foliage turns red to reddish purple. Bare-root trees ship in 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 foot sizes, in packs of 25, 50, 100 and 500, for buyers filling front yards, woodland edges and wholesale orders.

White Dogwood Size, Zones and Sun

Plan on 15 to 25 feet of height and up to 30 feet across, which is wider than most people expect. It's hardy in zones 5 to 9. If you're in the Piedmont or near the coast, we'd pick a spot that gets shade by mid-afternoon (the east side of a house works). Farther north, full sun's fine. Dogwoods like soil that's loose and full of organic matter, a bit on the acidic side, and they don't cope well with wet ground, so skip the low corner of the yard.

White Dogwood Blooms, Fruit and Fall Color

The white parts that look like petals are four bracts. The true flowers are tiny and greenish, packed in the center. Bloom runs from about March to May, ahead of the leaves. Glossy red fruit follows in clusters of three or four from August into October. People find it bitter, but songbirds, quail and wild turkey eat it. Leaves color red to reddish purple in fall.

White Dogwood and Wildlife

Spring azure caterpillars feed on the leaves, butterflies visit the blooms, and several Andrena bees depend on the tree. Deer browse the twigs, so fence young trees where deer are common. For companion trees, see our dogwood and maple planting ideas.

Good to Know About White Dogwood

Spot anthracnose, powdery mildew and borers are the usual troubles. Dogwood anthracnose, the serious one, shows up mostly at 1,800 feet and above. Leave room for airflow, water through dry spells and keep mulch off the trunk. White dogwood does best in yard and woodland-edge soil rather than hard city sites. Our flowering trees for small yards cover other options for tight spaces.
