Product Details

We ship bare-root pink dogwood trees in spring 2027, each 2 to 4 feet tall. Packs run 25, 50, 100 and 500. These are pink-flowering dogwoods, Cornus florida.

Pink Dogwood Tree Size and Age

A mature tree is usually 15 to 25 feet high, with a crown 15 to 30 feet wide. In the Upper South it can reach about 40 feet. A 10-year-old tree stands around 16 feet. The longest-lived dogwoods reach about 80 years. The bark breaks into small scaly blocks as the tree ages, dark gray to brown.

The Pink Is Bracts, Not Petals

The showy pink parts are four bracts, each about 2 inches long, with a notch at the tip. The true flowers are tiny and greenish yellow. About 20 of them gather in a head 1 to 2 cm across, in the middle of the bracts. The tree blooms from March to May, before the leaves open. Kousa dogwood, from Asia, blooms about a month later.

Fruit, Birds and Butterflies

Clusters of 2 to 10 bright red fruits, 10 to 15 mm long, ripen in late summer. Dozens of bird species eat them and spread the seed, along with grouse, wild turkey, squirrels and black bears. People find the fruit too sour. The leaves feed the caterpillars of the spring azure butterfly, the cecropia moth and the Io moth. Three mining bees, Andrena fragilis, A. integra and A. platyparia, depend on the flowers. The leaves turn red to reddish purple in fall.

State Tree and Hard Wood

Virginia and Missouri named the flowering dogwood their state tree. Virginia and North Carolina named it their state flower. The wood is hard and dense. It has been used for golf club heads, mallets, rake teeth, tool handles and butcher blocks.

Good to Know About Pink Dogwood

Plant it in full sun to part shade. In warm areas, give it shade in the afternoon. It likes rich, moist, well-drained soil that runs acid to neutral.
