Product Details
Mulberry trees (genus Morus) are fast-growing deciduous trees grown for sweet summer fruit and broad shade. We supply bare-root red and white mulberry in packs of 25 and 100 for orchards, landscapers, nurseries and wildlife plantings.
Red Mulberry vs White Mulberry
Red mulberry (Morus rubra) is native to the eastern United States. It grows 25 to 60 feet tall with a spread of about 35 to 40 feet and is hardy from zones 4 - 9. Its fruit is reddish and ripens to dark purple. White mulberry (Morus alba) comes from China and has naturalized across the United States. It grows from 30 - 60 feet tall with a 30 - 50 foot spread and is hardy in zones 4 to 8. Its fruit ripens white or pink, and sometimes dark red or purple-black.
Growth, Flowers and Fruit
Both grow quickly. Male and female flowers appear on separate trees in spring, and only female trees produce fruit. The fruit ripens in summer. It can be eaten fresh or made into jam, jelly and pies, and birds and other wildlife feed on it. Leaves turn yellow in fall.
Where Mulberry Grows Best
Choose a sunny spot with rich, moist, but well-draining soil. Mulberry adapts to clay, loam and sand, and white mulberry also tolerates part shade. Browse our fruit trees for other fruiting options.
Before You Plant
Dropped fruit stains walkways, patios and vehicles, so plant away from them. Mulberries self-seed readily and can become weedy. White mulberry can hybridize with native red mulberry and is restricted in some states, such as Wisconsin, so check your local rules.
Sizes, Packs and Shipping
Choose from three bare-root sizes: 1 to 2 feet, 2 to 3 feet and 3 to 4 feet. Packs of 100 lower the price per tree. Trees ship bare-root in November 2026. Read our mulberry tree buying guide and fruit trees for sunny spring yards for planting ideas.
