Giant Ostrich Fern also likes shade and moisture, but keep in mind it prefers lighter soil with organic matter added. Bracken Fern grows fast and handles many climates, though we tell customers to use it carefully because it can spread aggressively.

If you are planting into heavy ground, Christmas Fern is usually our first pick among the best ferns for clay soil and wet shade. Its clumping habit is easier to manage than Bracken Fern, and its roots help hold slopes and banks. Ostrich Fern also works well in consistently moist spots, especially along streambanks, but it prefers fertile soil rather than tight, compacted clay. So, if your site stays wet and dense after rain, start with Christmas Fern. If you improve the soil with organic matter and want more height, move to Ostrich Fern or Giant Ostrich Fern.

For moisture-loving ferns for poor drainage, we usually suggest Christmas Fern for structure and Ostrich Fern for size. Christmas Fern handles moist woodland conditions well and helps with erosion on slopes. Ostrich Fern suits pond edges and streambanks because it likes moderate to high moisture and spreads in broad clumps. Giant Ostrich Fern also fits wetland-style planting, especially where you want a softer, airy look around foundations or shade gardens. But Bracken Fern is not our first choice for poor drainage, since its description notes it does not do well where drainage is weak.

All four can handle shade, but the details matter. Christmas Fern, Bracken Fern, Ostrich Fern, and Giant Ostrich Fern are all listed for sun or shade, yet each one performs best with protection from harsh afternoon heat. Bracken Fern likes partial shade and can tolerate full sun, but it does better with some cover. Ostrich Fern and Giant Ostrich Fern are stronger choices for low-light beds, especially where humidity stays high through summer. If you are trying to shop ferns for low-light problem spots, Christmas Fern is the most forgiving option.

Christmas Fern stays compact. It usually matures at 1-2 feet tall and up to 2 feet wide, so it fits borders and narrow shade beds well. Giant Ostrich Fern reaches about 3 feet tall with a similar spread, so it gives you presence without the full height of standard Ostrich Fern. Bracken Fern can reach 2-4 feet and may expand quickly when conditions suit it.
