White mulberry (Morus alba) comes from China and has naturalized across the United States. It grows from 30 - 60 feet tall with a 30 - 50 foot spread and is hardy in zones 4 to 8. Its fruit ripens white or pink, and sometimes dark red or purple-black.

Growth, Flowers and Fruit

Both grow quickly. Male and female flowers appear on separate trees in spring, and only female trees produce fruit. The fruit ripens in summer. It can be eaten fresh or made into jam, jelly and pies, and birds and other wildlife feed on it. Leaves turn yellow in fall.

Where Mulberry Grows Best

Choose a sunny spot with rich, moist, but well-draining soil.
